Gambling operation busted from inside a Salinas home
A gambling operation running from inside a local home in Salinas was busted on Tuesday, leaving 13 people detained by police.Through a search warrant, police found over $2,000 in six different electronic gambling machines, heroin, meth, and an illegal handgun inside an England Avenue residence. Salinas police told KSBW they were actively looking into this residence prior, and for Tuesday’s search, they brought in multiple police officers, a SWAT team and a CHP presence. They said they had to prepare for anything. "There’s a lot of activity here, a lot of people," Salinas Police Commander Brian Johnson said at the scene. "We weren’t sure what we were going to encounter."Police say some of the detained individuals were felons in possession of a ghost gun, and there were even familiar faces the department had previously dealt with.Neighbors in the area said this home’s illegal activity had gone on for too long. One local, who asked to remain anonymous, said this bust was something they had hoped would happen soon, and many in the neighborhood were scared for their safety. "I hope the police department, the sheriff’s department, pay attention to what’s going on," said one neighbor. "We have children, there’s young families, mostly a lot of older people, they’re afraid to be by themselves."Those living around this home’s gambling operation said they had seen illegal activity on the property for a while. "The garbage, the traffic, all the illegal things," one neighbor said. "You’re not safe."Neighbors said they want to see justice and their neighborhood cleaned up so they can feel safe again.
