Hi,
I'm a new player and I have read this term a couple of times but I'm not sure of its meaning. Is it just referring to short maps? How can I spot these kind of maps? Should I avoid them if I want to improve?

Short maps with lots of 1-2 jumps are what usually comes to mind when I hear the word "farm map" in standard, so yeah
However it has to give a lot of PP for its actual difficulty
Time flies fast doesn't it?

For me I would define farm maps as: 1. Short(less than 2min), 2. gives way too much pp for their difficulty.

Like there can be some 1:40min stream or fingercontrol map which have 700combo
Farm map can be any farm map, it doesn't have to be pp farm map.
It can be score farm map.
It can be ss farm maps

When I think of farm I just think of pp farm, so I guess with what I said It would be for pp farm maps

Farm maps are basically some maps that give a large amount of PP more than it should be giving you. They are short and give and excessive amount of PP, even if they are easy to finish.
I honestly use PP maps to farm PP sometimes. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing when playing these maps, but make sure to use actual training maps if you want to improve. For example, jump training maps and stream training maps (Not sure if I worded that correctly).

yeah, there exist some <2 mins finger control map (which gives decent pp now) or even tech maps. Also a pp farm maps doesn't have to be short. There exist some long consistency farm maps (either jump, burst, or streams).

The OP most definitely refers to pp farm maps though, since that's what they usually are mostly mentioned.
